Spain General Election 2023: Live Results

All 350 seats in Spain’s main legislative body, Congress, will be up for grabs in the election. If no party has an absolute majority in Congress ⎯ the likely scenario ⎯ the parties negotiate until they form a governing coalition.

The referendum, scheduled for later this year, is the first time Spain has held a general election so late in the summer, raising concerns about turnout. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez PSOEThe main social-democratic party called a snap election after poor results among left-leaning parties during regional and local elections in May.

The PSOE is being challenged on the right BpA major conservative and Christian Democratic political party led by Senator Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

If the PP or PSOE fail to secure a majority, the centre-right PP could form a coalition with the far-right. Vox, led by Santiago Abascal, member of the Congress of Representatives. Similarly, an alliance with the centre-left PSOE could be formed Summer, a coalition of 20 progressive and regional political parties led by Second Deputy Prime Minister and Labor Minister Yolanda Díaz. Sumer includes Unidas Podemos, a leftist party that won 35 seats in 2019 and has struggled since its meteoric rise eight years ago.

If any of those coalitions fail to secure a majority in parliament, they must seek the support of smaller regional parties.

In addition to the Congress of Representatives, the regional chamber, the Senate, has 208 seats, but that body does not participate in electing the prime minister.
