Parts of Colorado and South Dakota received more than a foot of snow.
Parts of South Dakota and Colorado had more than a foot of snow by Wednesday morning, with Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas not far behind.
Some areas in South Dakota received as much as 14 inches, and Colorado had 13 inches. Wyoming and Nebraska each saw about 11. Parts of Kansas saw about 8.5 inches.
More than 17,000 customers were without power in North Dakota early Wednesday morning, according to Poweroutage.us.
Other than two inches in some places, additional snow accumulation was unexpected.
The National Weather Service in Hastings, Nebraska, posted on social media that “a slight chance of lingering light snow will last through Thursday. Gradual warming this week will taper off later in the week with a slight drop in temperatures on Sunday.”
Weather warnings for the region began to expire Wednesday morning, but strong winds are expected to continue and snow will move from South Dakota into Nebraska, western Kansas, Wyoming and Colorado.
Wind gusts reached 71 mph in Colorado. Wind gusts were 67 and 63 mph in North and South Dakota, respectively.
Up to half an inch of snow is on trees and power lines from Minnesota to North Dakota.
Heavy rain is expected in Washington, DC, Wednesday morning and New York City in the afternoon.
