Kristaps Porzingis Has ‘Rare’ Leg Injury; The NBA finals are uncertain

Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis has what the team called a “rare injury” to his left leg and is considered day-to-day for Boston’s upcoming games in the NBA Finals.

The Celtics announced on Tuesday that Porzingis had a torn medial retinaculum in his left leg that allowed the posterior tibialis tendon to dislocate.

Porzingis, who missed 10 straight games earlier this season with a sore right calf, suffered the latest injury in the third quarter of Boston’s Game 2 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

The Celtics said Tuesday that the two injuries were unrelated. Porzingis said after Sunday’s game that he expected to be on the court for Game 3.

“I’ll do my best to be out there tomorrow,” Porzingis told reporters Tuesday, with a black shirt covering his lower left leg.

The Celtics take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, which moves to Dallas for Game 3 on Wednesday and Game 5 on Friday.

Porzingis, 28, hasn’t played in Dallas in 2½ years since the Mavericks were traded to the Washington Wizards. He joined the Celtics in a trade last summer.

Porzingis jump-started the Celtics with 11 points and two blocks in the first quarter of a 107-89 win in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. He finished with 20 points, 3 blocks and 6 rebounds.
