US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) New data released Addressing the link, or lack thereof, between the COVID-19 vaccine and sudden cardiac death in healthy young adults.
assessment, Conducted between June 2021 and December 2022, it examined the death certificates and vaccination records of 1,292 Oregon decedents between the ages of 16 and 30 who died of “cardiac or undetermined” causes.
The CDC determined that “the data do not support an association of the COVID-19 vaccine with sudden cardiac death among previously healthy young adults.” The vaccine is still recommended for everyone over 6 months of age.
Health Misinformation: Four years after Covid, misinformation is still putting the health of some Americans at risk. Here's why.
CDC studies cardiac deaths and the COVID vaccine
By the time the vaccine becomes available to youth in 2021, reports of myocarditis, particularly among young males, have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), the CDC said in its analysis. Often caused by viral infections and causes inflammation and damage to the heart muscle.
These reports, combined with media coverage of sudden deaths among previously healthy young athletes attributed to the vaccine, prompted the CDC to launch an investigation.
Using death certificates and mandatory vaccination records from Oregon, the CDC identified causes of death listed as “sudden death,” “arrhythmia,” “dysrhythmia,” “asystole,” “cardiac arrest” among 16- to 30-year-olds. Myocarditis, “heart failure,” “unknown,” “undetermined,” or “pending.”
The 1,292 Oregon cases were stratified by sex: 925 (72%) men and 367 (28%) women. The investigators took records of these cases' mRNA Covid-19 vaccinations within 100 days of death.
- Of the 925 young adults in the study, two received the mRNA covid vaccine within 100 days of death and the study found that a cardiac diagnosis could not be excluded as a cause of death.
- Of the 367 young women in the study, one received the mRNA covid vaccine within 100 days of death and the study found that a cardiac diagnosis could not be excluded as the cause of death.
Fact Check: No, DNA fragments in Covid-19 vaccines are not linked to 'major safety concerns'
Risk of heart problems higher after COVID infection, not vaccine: CDC
As of July 17, 2023, no fatal cases of myocarditis have been reported to VAERS in Oregon. Also, a total of 979,289 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered to Oregonians ages 16 to 30 between May 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022.
Data collected from 40 U.S. health care systems between January 2021 and January 2022, after COVID-19 infection, after COVID-19 infection, after COVID-19 infection, Jan.
These findings are in line with past research on the safety and efficacy of mRNA vaccination. Therefore, the CDC recommends vaccination and booster shots for people older than six months to prevent COVID-19 and serious complications or death.
