MSNBC’s Nicole Wallace reports that while opposing the Pentagon’s abortion policies and continuing to block military promotions in the Senate, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) was shocked by what he described as the latest display of ignorance.
Tuberville told reporters Tuesday that Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley will remain in the role until after his official Oct. 1 term and until a replacement is named.
“I call Millie and wish her the best of luck, but I don’t know if she’s going anywhere until I get somebody confirmed,” the Alabama Republican said.
Reporters explained that Millie had to leave by law.
“Does he want to leave?” Tuberville asked. “He’s out. We’ll get someone else to do the job. But hopefully it’ll be over by then.”
Wallace couldn’t believe the exchange.
“Hopefully what’s done? You’re the problem,” he said Tuesday.
Tuberville It is blocking alone Military appointments and promotions have languished in the Senate for months, leading to the backlash of hundreds. He says he is doing so in protest of a Defense Department policy that allows service members to take leave to obtain abortion care in states where it is available.
Tuesday’s exchange was “another layer of Tuberville’s profound and embarrassing ignorance of the U.S. military,” Wallace said.
