After dominating much of the tournament, the early marquee game of the day ended with Caleb Williams and No. 8 USC coming off a nail-biter in Colorado. The defending Heisman Trophy winner threw for over 400 yards and six touchdowns, but had to sweat out the victory as the Trojans’ defense was held to 27 second-half points.
But that game and all the rest of the day were topped by late-night action. In a wild shootout at Starkville in a contest with more than 1,300 yards of combined offense, No. 20 Ole Miss, 55-49, over No. 13 defeated LSU. No. 11 Notre Dame defeated No. 17 Duke 21-14 in a thriller in Durham. The Irish won a last-gasp victory a week after their own loss.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Kentucky’s Ray Davis ran for 280 yards and three touchdowns, the No. 22 had a life day himself in the Wildcats’ lopsided win over Florida. No. 3 Texas had no problem handling Kansas, despite a fortunate bounce by the Jayhawks to No. 1 Georgia survived a road scare at Auburn, and Ole Miss bounced back to beat LSU.
Week 5 of the college football season delivered in more ways than one.
