Democratic delegates and DJ Cassidy turned the Democratic National Convention into a musical cornucopia on Tuesday, with each state lending its support against a playlist of songs chosen to represent that area.
The roll call was largely symbolic as Democrats chose their nominee in a virtual roll call earlier this month. Minnesota’s support of Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walls was no surprise — and neither was the choice of Prince to represent the state.
“1999″ and “Kiss” by Prince and The Revolution were both played from the speakers during Minnesota’s set. Sen. Tina Smith excitedly announced her support for Minnesota’s delegation, flanked by Sen. Amy Globuchar was there. Klobuchar endorsed Prince in his brief remarks.
“I’m Amy Klobuchar, Senator from the great state of Minnesota, where almost everyone votes and rules purple!”
A surprise performance by Georgia rapper Lil Jon, which also featured a musical reference to Walls, became a meme after Harris chose him as his partner. Lil Jon showed his support for the state by singing “VP Harris … Governor Walls” as part of the “Get Low” performance “To the window, to the wall!” He sang that.
Other state songs include “Good Luck, Babe!” Chappell Roan for Missouri, Jack Harlow’s “First Class” for Kentucky, “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers for Nevada and “Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen for New Jersey.
